Abstract:

The Swiss National Sound Archives, together with South African BOP Recording Studios, started a very ambitious project this year: the making of a centre of excellence on all things audio, for South Africa and its neighbouring countries. Besides all well known recording studio activities, this new organization will specialize in the field of preservation of audio documents. This is maybe an uncommon public/private partnership, with the common goal of concentrating a vast expertise in a neutral zone, within a state-of-the-art facility, in order to allow efficient delivery to a wide, culturally rich area and population. As for the audiovisual community, the BOP Academy of Audio Sciences will offer training, consulting, as well as small scale re-recording, restoration, and forensics services. The realization of this centre will be possible thanks to voluntary work.
